A Church of England in the diocese of Manchester.

St Nicholas Church

with St John and St Michael

Founded 1511—listed 2*

The stained glass of the East Window was installed in 1858. At one time it stood above where the chancel steps are now.  It bears the inscription:

DEI BENEFICIORUM MEMORES MDCCCLVIII.

The new chancel of 1898 saw the whole window moved and slightly modified.

It has eight lights depicting episodes in the life of Jesus.

The Annunciation

The Birth

The Presentation in the Temple

The Baptism by John

The agony in the garden

The Crucifixion

The Ascension

The Resurrection

In 1753 the church was enlarged at the East end by seven yards and a gallery was formed over the Altar.  There were two windows at the East end at this time but no record appears to exist as to their nature.  An old picture appears to suggest that the top window was a single light perhaps to give light to the gallery and the bottom window was of three lights.

The present chancel was added in 1898 and the East window of 1858 modified and re-erected.  The head of the window was changed and two of the bottom lights were interchanged.
